What is a Housing Cheat?
- Someone who unlawfully rents out their home without the knowledge of SLH
- Someone who is living at the home after the tenant has left and they have not been given permission by SLH
- Someone who obtains their home by giving false information;misrepresenting their identity or their circumstances
- Someone who wrongly claims succession. This relates to when a tenant dies and someone at the home claims succession rights. For example, they may say they lived with the tenant before they died when in fact they were living elsewhere
Most people apply for housing with SLH and wait their turn to be offered a home from our Housing Register. Not housing cheats – they don’t wait, they JUMP THE QUEUE.
SLH is carrying out a targeted campaign to wipe out housing cheats in our neighbourhoods.
You can help
You might know that somebody is living elsewhere and not at their SLH home
You may see the tenant moving out and someone else remaining at the home who you know is not the tenant
You may see someone collecting rent from your neighbours on a weekly basis
You might be suspicious because the tenant at the home keeps changing.
If you suspect someone is a housing cheat then let us know. We will investigate your concerns and take any necessary action. We will pay a £500 reward for any information received about housing fraud that leads to recovery of a home that we can then let to someone more deserving.
Anything you tell us will be held in the strictest of confidence and all reports can be made anonymously. Fill out our on-line Report Housing Fraud Form or alternatively contact us by telephone 0151 285 5600, speak to your Neighbourhood Officer confidentially or ring our Housing Fraud Hotline on 07879 483173.
